Objectives

By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
  • Define growth and development by  WHO. 
  • Identify the various parameters/tools used in assessing growth.
  • Acquire the skills needed in measuring various body parts.

Introduction

  • Growth; is a progressive increase in size of a child or parts of a child. (WHO, 2012).
  • Development; is a progressive acquisition of various skills such as head support, speaking, learning, expressing of feeling and relating with other people. (WHO, 2012)

Growth Charts

  • These charts are simple tools to assess whether children are growing and developing as they should.
  • These are satisfactory tools to diagnose deviation of growth from normal
  • They can also be used to see whether efforts to reduce child mortality and diseases are effective. 
  • The new standards demonstrate for the first time ever shows that children born in different regions of the world, when given the optimum start in life, have the potential to grow and develop within the same range of height and weight for their age
