Enteritis is the inflammation of the small intestine, usually caused by infections from viruses, bacteria, or parasites, though it may also result from radiation therapy, certain medications, or autoimmune conditions. Common symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. Most infectious cases are self-limiting and improve with rest, adequate fluid intake, and supportive care, but severe or persistent cases may require specific treatment depending on the underlying cause. If left untreated, significant dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can occur, particularly in children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.
