Component Task: Explanation of Procedure to a Child/Family/Caregiver

It is the act of explaining a procedure to a child/family/caregiver in simple terms, an action or task that will be carried out before commencement of the procedure.

Aims

·         Seek patient/clients co-operation and consent

·         Provide clear understanding and purpose of the action or task or procedure

·         Allay fear and anxiety for maximum cooperation

·         Serve as a legal backing for the nurse

Steps

·         Inform patient/clients about the specific procedure and its purpose

·         Find out patient/clients level of knowledge on the intended procedure

·         Explain to patient/client what he/she should expect from the nurses

·         Explain the steps of the procedure in clear and simple language

·         Explain to patient/client the level of invasion or pain (if any)

·         Outline the actions that will be taken to reduce pain (if any)

·         Explain to patient/client his/her role during and after the procedure

·         Allow patient/client to ask questions for clarity

·         Assess patient/clients level of willingness to undergo the specific procedure
