Component Task: Explanation of a Procedure to a Patient/Client

This is the process of describing a procedure, an action or task that will be carried out by the midwife for a patient/client during delivering of care.

Aims

Seek patient/client’s co-operation and consent

Provide clear understanding of the action or task

Allay fear and anxiety

Indicate the purpose of the procedure

Steps

1.        Inform patient/client about the specific procedure and its purpose

2.      Find out patient’s/client’s level of knowledge on the intended procedure

3.      Explain to patient/client what he/she should expect from the nurse

4.      Explain the steps of the procedure in clear and simple language

5.      Explain to patient/client the level of invasion or pain if any

6.      Outline the actions that will be taken to reduce pain if any

7.       Explain to patient/client his/her role during and after the procedure

8.      Allow patient/client to ask questions for clarity

9.      Assess patient’s/client’s level of willingness to undergo the specific procedure
