This is the process by which the nurse assists the patient to gain knowledge and understanding of his/her disease process and potential treatment. Through this process, the nurse provides relevant information to the patient which might influence his/her mental health decisions, life choices or general behavoiur. Educating patient on his/her condition should not be limited to only the patient but extended to the patient’s relative(s)/ significant other(s).

Steps
1. Establish rapport (refer procedure) and explain procedure to patient
2. Put patient in a desired position either sitting or lying down
3. Sit comfortably on a chair by patient’s side
4. Use language patient understands and speak audibly
5. Ensure enabling and relaxed environment
6. Maintain privacy and individuality of patient
7. Assess patient’s previous knowledge/level of awareness about condition
8. Build on patient’s knowledge about the condition with relevant scientific facts that will help with patient’s recovery
9. Explain to patient the rationale for treatment and possible outcome
10. Encourage patient to repeat what has been discussed for emphasis and clarity
11. Allow patient to ask questions and respond appropriately
12. Provide patient with pamphlets/flyers with clear simple message if available
13. Express appreciation to patient and relative(s)/significant other(s)
14. Document procedure in the nurses’ notes/patient’s folder
