The Patient With Stroke Power Point Presentation

Introduction

  • Stroke is also known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or brain attack
  • Stroke is a syndrome of rapid onset of cerebral deficit lasting more than 24 hours or leading to death with no cause apparent other than a vascular one
  • It is a condition characterised by neurological deficits that come as a result of sudden decrease in blood flow to a localized part of the brain
  • Thus, stroke occurs when there is inadequate blood supply to a portion of the brain or when there is haemorrhage into the brain resulting in death (ischemia) of the brain cells
  • During stroke, functions which are under control by the portion brain affected becomes lost or impaired. These may include: movement, emotions or sensations
  • Severity of the loss of function is dependent, and varies with location and extent of the brain damage involved
